The client
The Graduate School at Royal Holloway is an academic community that fosters intellectual and social links
between postgraduate students and researchers from different disciplines and works to continually improve their
postgraduate experience. They offer courses, training, and other support to ensure this improvement.
Their challenge
When C2 met the Dean of Schools , it was identified that career development was a key area that the
needed more support. Royal Holloway also needed to demonstrate this careers help as part of their Roberts funding.
C2 met with Dean of Schools to find out what support they were already providing, and what their needs were
for more training. In addition to more standard components of Careers workshops, we also discussed other skills that
would make their PhD students even more effective.
Our solution
Career sessions covering topics that included Building Your CV, Handling Conflict, Influencing Skills, Interview Skills,
Leadership, Negotiation, and Networking.
How
The sessions were scheduled on different days of the week to fit more easily into the researchers’ schedules.
The ½ day sessions offered the opportunity to delve deeply into the subject matter and to put this theory into
hands on practice to meet the needs of PhD students.
Feedback from the participants
“The course leader was very effective: good presentation and approachable.”
